FFWAD 24 - Sins of the Father by @selfproclaimedunicorn
For my first foray into this yearly celebration with @renegadeguild, I picked the brilliant and fantastic story, Sins of the Father by @selfproclaimedunicorn. Misa has taken the fantastic AU premise 'What if Daemon Targaryen and Rhea Royce had kids?' and has run with it in the most delicious and satisfying way. The story isn't complete, but the first 'arc' has a good stopping point at a whopping 160k words, which made for the chonkiest book you could imagine.
This was the twelth book I've bound (both fic and rebinds of old favorites) and I tried several new techniques for it including rounding and backing the spine. I also stretched my legs in the formatting department and went all in with the interior. That meant ordering some special springhill paper to do these fantastic maps for the endpages. Full details behind the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Typesetting: Normally I've kept my settings pretty minimal as I got used to the ins and outs of InDesign (during this, I did purchase Affinity Publisher and might end up moving to that, but I'm finally getting the hang of ID and you can pry it from my cold hands). I really wanted to mimic some of the interior of Fire & Blood for this, so I hunted down the fonts used and took an image of the decorative banner you see on the sides to use for the chapter openers. I also wanted to include timelines and family trees in true historically inspired fantasy tradition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The family tree was created based off of the author's spreadsheet in Google Drawing, which I found to be the easiest thing to use when it comes to creating chaotic family trees like this (In the past I'd used lucid chart for a printable version, but google worked better here).
the timeline is honestly my favorite thing and I learned how to use tables in ID for the first time. I'm incredibly pleased with it. The formatting is based upon the line of kings in the source. The timeline covers the events of the first arc as printed in this particular story.
The chapter openers are some of my favorite! As the children are proud to be House Royce, I wanted to reflect that. The runes you see behind the Chapter number and title are the Floki font and name the character whose the POV for each chapter.
Since there's plenty of High Valyrian spoken and the author doesn't include the translations within narrative, it was the perfect moment to set up footnotes. I'll absolutely be doing this for my own story when I bind it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rounding and Backing: So this was a total adventure, but I really wanted the old book feel. I made the mistake of pressing the book for too long and lost a lot of the swell in the spine to round but it worked out AND I managed to back it a little bit. Since I wasn't doing cord tapes for the spine (this was a version of the three piece bradel), I had to troubleshoot. I ended up cutting strips of the leather cord I bought from michaels and laminating those pieces together and placing them on the oxford hollow on the spine (given how thick the book is, I wanted to give it as much structural strength as possible). The 'leather' covering you see is actually the craft leather (polyester) from Dollar Tree and it's pretty awesome but definitely has difficulties staying put with glue. I followed the normal procedure and slathered both sides up and used twine to compress the bookcloth along those leather pieces. there's a little gaping in some places which I think would help if I'm able to properly apply backing paper to the polyester.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HTV do's and don'ts: Hi! don't be me and forget to apply your teflon sheets before applying the HTV because then you fuck with the polyester but it's not too bad. The other pro-tip is to gently apply the iron to the cover so it's warm before applying the HTV so it can start to stick. I had to apply the front cover in three pieces and do the title twice. Also, it's really difficult to apply HTV to a rounded spine so I'll have to figure out how to set up the spine and cover before applying (since there's a certain amount of stretching the bookcloth over the spine). The spine might end up having to be regular adhesive vinyl for that. Also, it's stupidly hard to find metallic HTV in bronze.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Front matter and final thoughts: The bronze dragon was a lucky find through an extensive google search, and the runes surrounding it are 'we remember with fire and blood', a combination of House Royce and House Targaryen's words. Seems fitting four Yorick, Ella, and Aemon! The copyright page is mimicked off the source's style, including the AO3 information, the creative commons and fair use information, the guild stamp, a QR code to the AO3 page, and my own press stamp! The summary is pulled from AO3 as well.
All in all, I made this book twice and I loved it and learned so much every time.
I'm so happy with this project and I'm so excited to do the next arc! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful story, Misa!

OH BOY- 😅 ITS BRINK UPDATE TIME
So um… it’s reached that point where every few months I redetermine when I think the Brink series will actually end.
And I’ve sort of reached an uncomfortable position of… I don’t really know? One of my biggest fears I had when writing this series early on was that this silly little fanfiction would still being the main thing I’m writing/working on, even long after Fable SMP is finished, and with the finale rapidly approaching, and the fact that I’m barely through the 3rd book out of 4 (not to mention still trying to edit books 1 and 2) that’s becoming more and more of a certain scenario.
I suppose, in the end, I’ve settled on a compromise with myself, of sorts?
I am going to keep writing Brink for as long as it takes to tell that story, and to tell it well. Maybe it’s a touch of the gamblers fallacy, but… I’ve spent so much time on this fic series now, I don’t want to force myself to race to the finish line? I want to take my time, and handle something which, as silly as it sounds, has become very special to me, with the care it deserves.
And I suppose I can only hope that, moving forwards, even after Fable is over those who have enjoyed reading Brink will still enjoy reading it, and will want to see that story finished as much as I do. I cannot express how much I am grateful for the support on those fics from absolutely everyone, and it feels like a disservice to that support to not take my time finishing the series properly, even if it takes a while.
With that being said, I do hope that at least in some form, the series will be done by if not the end of 2024, then by this time next year. Not a promise, but an ideal scenario.
Anyway, all that being said, if anyone is interested, here are some updates on how Brink is coming along:
The physical printable/bindable copy of Brink should be made available to download fully edited by the end of April.
Likewise, the Brink Audiobook should be completed by the end of April (I’m in the final run of editing now).
The Edge audiobook is in production! Chapters will begin releasing as soon as the Brink audiobook concludes, however there will likely be a short hiatus afterwards
Likewise, audiobooks of the short stories are in production!
Edge and Border are currently in the middle of a major editing rehaul, for a lot of reasons. It is sadly going to take a while. Hopefully, however, by the end, they will be cleaner, more compelling stories.
Border is not technically on hiatus, as I’m still working on chapters, but it is certainly delayed while previous books/chapters are edited.

Hi, I wanted to ask if you have any tips on how to put together a time schedule for writing a book. I tried to create one several times but always ended up with task paralysis since I didn't know what to do and how to time it. Do you have any advice? One of my goals is to at least write one book next year and without a schedule, I'm afraid I will lose sight of what I should do.
Schedule for Writing a Book
There's no universal timetable for writing a book. There are a million variables that play a role into how fast someone can write a book. Their personal writing speed, their level of experience, what they're writing and how long it will be, how much time they can put toward writing, and what they're aiming for (finished first draft, polished final draft, published book...) That said, there's really no way to come up with a timetable that will be reasonable for everyone.
Plot and structure are more important than a timetable. Even if there was a reasonable timetable for writing a book, that wouldn't really help you if you don't understand how stories work. If you were trying to build a house, I could say it will take a week to lay the foundation, and another month to frame the house and install the roof, and another month to install plumbing and electrical, and another month for insulation and drywall, but if you don't know how to do any of those things, that timetable doesn't help you. You need to learn how to actually lay a foundation, frame a house, install a roof, etc. if you want to actually build the house. Writing a novel is the same way. Before you can worry about a timetable, you have to learn how stories work.
Consider utilizing a book that will teach you plot and story structure while also helping you to plot out and structure your novel. There are all different ideas about how stories work and how to best plot and structure a novel, so there are a lot of really great books and workbooks out there that will help you do this. I'm a big fan of Save the Cat! Writes a Novel by Jessica Brody. Structuring Your Novel by K.M. Weiland is another good one, and it has an accompanying workbook. The Plot Whisperer by Martha Alderson is another one and it also has a workbook. You can also find printable novel planners on Etsy, often for less than 10 or 20 dollars.
If I had to give you a ballpark, totally arbitrary timetable, and assuming you have at least 3-5 hours a day to spend on writing, I would say you should probably plan to spend about a month plotting and planning, another month or two writing a zero draft or rough draft, another month or two reading through and revising that draft, another month or so with betas, another month or so revising, and another month or so editing and polishing. That gives you some wiggle room if you overshoot any of those estimates.
You can also "Weird Science" a timetable for yourself by taking a week or two to time yourself on various stages of story planning and writing. Start by finding a writing prompt that really inspires you. Then, time how long it takes (how many minutes spent) planning what you're going to write. Then, time how many minutes you spend actually writing. Finally, time how many minutes you spend editing and polishing. Now, math that out in conjunction with the length of your story. So, let's say you wrote a 5k word story and it took you 180 minutes to plot, 240 minutes to write, and 120 minutes to edit. So, for example, you plotted at 28 words per minute, so it would take you roughly 2500 minutes (41 hours) to plot a 70k word story. You wrote 21 words per minute, so it would take you roughly 3,333 minutes (56 hours) to write a 70k word story. And again, this is super rough, super ballpark but it can help give you a general idea of how long it might take you to actually do these things. But, again, it also depends a lot on what you're actually writing, what your level of experience is, etc.
My biggest tip for getting the work done is to use time blocking to help make sure you get the writing done. Essentially, each week you'll look at all your waking hours each day and block out the ones when you know you won't be able to write, such as the hours when you're at work or school. Then, schedule yourself for writing time in the available hours and make sure you stick to it. You may find yourself having to be really honest with yourself and do some serious prioritizing. For example, if you normally spend 2-3 hours a night playing video games, but you only have 3 hours of free time each night, you're not going to be able to spend 2-3 hours playing video games AND an hour or two writing.
Above all else, be gentle with yourself. Probably one of my biggest writing-related takeaways of 2023 was the brain science behind being overwhelmed by writing. So often, we put so much pressure on ourselves to meet goals, and get so frustrated with ourselves when we fail, that we end up making writing time something that fills us with anxiety. So our brains perceive that activity as a threat, which makes us want to avoid it. That said, make reasonable goals and set a reasonable timetable, but be very gentle with yourself if you struggle to stick to the timetable or meet your goals. Focus on the things you did accomplish, no matter how small and celebrate those accomplishments. Know that every little thing you do helps to move the needle forward a bit.
Happy writing and best wishes!

sorry i couldn't find out how to ask on your other blog.
that book binding you posted is gorgeous btw !!
I noticed that in one of the photos you included the disclaimer that you also edited it. I just had a question about how you formatted the text.
one of my biggest gripes with AO3 is text formatting (i often feel like i'm reading a legal document vs a novel/story) . Did you change how it is formatted on AO3 compared to printed?
I feel like i'm in the 0.5% that hate AO3 formatting but i thought i might as well ask in case you have any tips for that. >,>
(also how do you decide on the page size, do you just choose a standard size for all your projects? or do you vary it depending on what you are binding?)
thanks so much for taking the time to answer and for sharing your projects :) !!!!!!!!!!!
hey anon! I have asks turned off for the sideblog, but happy to answer here. Thanks very much!
I'm taking this opportunity to info-dump and link a lot of resources. I think they're useful for people new to either typesetting or bookbinding, but not all are directly related to your queries. That said, hope this is of use!
one of my biggest gripes with AO3 is text formatting (i often feel like i'm reading a legal document vs a novel/story) . Did you change how it is formatted on AO3 compared to printed?
I do a fair bit of editing when I'm binding a fic; typesetting is often the longest part of the process. Your mileage will vary depending on your experience with using word processor software, particularly the paragraph style and page style settings. Another factor is how simple/complicated you want your typeset to look. Replicating a published novel in format is difficult but learnable for a complete beginner.
I'm not equipped to give a full tutorial on how to typeset, but I'll point you towards some useful resources for ficbinding then talk about my own process.
ArmouredSuperHeavy has a tutorial on how to make Ao3's HTML downloads into a printable book in Microsoft Word. I use LibreOffice Writer myself, so this adaptation of the same tutorial is what I follow. Both are very helpful to reference as you're learning the typesetting ropes.
Personally, I don't mess around with HTML. I find it easiest to start by doing a Ctrl+A copy of the Entire Work fic view on Ao3 then pasting that into my word processor. This video tutorial by Beautifully Bound runs through how to do this in Microsoft Word using an AO3 fic as an example, including the associated steps needed to make the fic look novel-like. This is probably the best tutorial to address your gripe with AO3 formatting. Other than that, I'd recommend looking into videos or tutorials about typesetting novels for print. Same idea, and you may get more hits than searching for fanbind/ficbind typesetting tutorials.
More under the cut! Once I start yapping, it's hard to shut me up 🤷‍♀️
As a point of comparison, here's one of my fics on Ao3 and the corresponding typeset side by side:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beautifully Bound explains this in far better detail than I will, but off the top of my head, the steps involved:
making a new document and setting the default page size to whatever size I want the book's pages to be (A5 or A6 usually). You can also set the margins at this point, taking account of your printer settings.
CTRL+A and copying the entire work's text on AO3 then pasting it into the document.
removing all hyperlinks and AO3 frontmatter, things like the author tags, summary, notes, etc as well as any website text that got copied over alongside the fic.
(optional) running a spell check and ensuring grammar usage is consistent. For me that's substituting em dashes for hyphens between clauses, enforcing curly double quotation marks for dialogue, etc. LibreOffice Writer automates a lot of this with customisable settings, via Tools -> Auto-Correct. Here's also where to make sure character names are all spelled right, convert the text to or from US to UK English, etc.
picking out fonts for the body text, headers, page numbers, etc. This is where you'll want to use paragraph style settings. Page style settings also comes in clutch if, for example, you'd like different headers on alternating pages. I like having the author on the right, the fic title on the left.
setting the body text first line indent to whatever makes sense visually). This in particular helps make the fic feel more like a novel. You can also play around with line spacing and space between paragraphs at this stage. For this A6 typeset, I had a 0.75cm first line indent, 1.15 line spacing, and 0.15 spacing between paragraphs.
(optional) formatting the first line of the work to use small capitals and to add a drop caps to the first letter of the first word. Again, this is a convention in publishing which add a novel-like feeling to a printed fanwork.
Inserting page numbers, adding images, coming up with how I wanted the "copyright" page to look—optional for the most part, but these are details that make a fic appear more like a novel.
For multi-chapter works, there's extra work in formatting chapter titles as headings so that they're referenced correctly in the automatic table of contents word processors can generate.
Once you have a typeset you're happy with, and if you're considering printing and binding it as a book, then you'll need to look into how to create and print signatures. Personally, this is something I had to actually try (and mess up a bunch of times) before I got to grips with it. Understanding how both your printer and your PDF reader work, particularly printer margins and booklet print settings, is key.
I won't go into as much detail on this, but if it's something you have an interest in, I'd recommend starting with DAS Bookbinding's tutorial. DAS has tutorials for everything bookbinding related so when in doubt, check his channel! Plenty of other YouTubers also have good videos on making signatures.
This resource is extremely useful once you've got your head around how to print signatures manually, so here's a link for anyone in that space: GitHub Bookbinding Imposer. Essentially, this does the signature creation for you, removing the need for booklet print settings in your PDF reader.
also how do you decide on the page size, do you just choose a standard size for all your projects? or do you vary it depending on what you are binding?
I have access to both A4 and A5 sized paper and my printer can handle printing on either size. In bookbinding, normally two pages are printed per side of the paper (which are then folded in half as part of a signature). That is, when I print on A4 paper, it's to make an A5 sized book. Printing on A5 paper will yield an A6 sized book.
Before I begin typesetting, I'll usually know what paper I plan to use, so the typeset will be one size down from the paper. So far, I've made softcover pamphlets at A6 size and casebound books in A5. No real method of choice for me, it's whatever I feel most suits the project.
---
If you made it this far anon, thanks for reading! Here's links to a few general resources if bookbinding is something you'd like to explore more:
DAS Bookbinding (YouTube, bookbinding in all forms)
Sea Lemon DIY (YouTube, bookbinding and other crafts)
bitter melon bindery (YouTube, bookbinding, particularly beginner friendly!)
Jess Less (YouTube, demonstrations of fanbinding and re-binding existing novels)

7 Wholesome Floofcanons to Heal From Inevitable Ever Crisis Trauma ❤️
~
• Sephiroth, Genesis, and Angeal, playing video games together in Genesis’s apartment. It’s one of the first times where Angeal commends Genesis’s competitiveness and gives a genuine laugh at how hard his friends are going at it. He keeps “switching sides” in order to keep the healthy rivalry going, as well as a way to boost both SOLDIERs’ self-esteem while he’s at it (and also just likes hearing “ANGEAL! HOW DARE YOU ROOT FOR MY NEMESIS?”). Ofc, the tides are turned when a two v. two minigame comes up, and Genesis & Seph join forces to crush their wishy-washy cheerleader. Angeal is playfully irritated by the defeat as Gen & Seph share a best-freindsy high five <333
• Zack, unable to sleep one night, too riled up from a training session he just returned from and desperately in the mood to go on a mission. Angeal tries everything in the books from lavender fragrance to a story, but nothing seems to calm the SOLDIER down. Suddenly, Sephiroth shows up, needing to borrow something from his friend, and notices the predicament. He tells Angeal he knows what to do before going up to Zack, crouching down beside him, and whispering something in his ear. Mere seconds later, Zack is plopped into his pillow and falling asleep. As Angeal and Sephiroth leave the room, Angeal incredulously asks what Seph did. Sephiroth simply gives a soft smiles and says he told Zack he could attend a mission in his dreams <3
• Sephiroth & Genesis, teaming up to make dinner one night when Angeal is bushed after a long day. They both realize amid their act of kindness that neither of them actually know how to cook, and so the two proceed to use one of Angeal’s cookbooks. What they end up making was actually something meant for dessert, and the three of them have a good laugh as they treat themselves to a sweet potato pie for dinner. <3
• Sephiroth, falling ill while his best friends are away on a mission. He tries to convince himself that he is fine, continuing to go about his duties, but the sickness has too much of a grasp on his throat to disguise when Angeal & Gen call to check-in. Hours later, and Sephiroth finds the two SOLDIERs at his apartment door, having managed to return home a week early from their 10 day-long mission in order to take care of their friend. Sephiroth falls asleep that night with an empty bowl of soup by his side and a cold washcloth pressed against his head <3
• Zack, slowly getting tutored by Angeal about the wonderful world of botany so he can impress Aerith. Angeal even finds little printable quizzes Zack can take to test his knowledge. Zack gets perfect scores every time <3
• Zack, slowly getting tutored by Sephiroth about the wonderful world of literature so he can have something to talk about with Genesis. The man hands him a copy of Genesis’s favorite novel, the likes of which he jokingly tells Zack to read. This eventually leads to Zack & Genesis starting a book club in SOLDIER together after Zack falls into an unironic reading spree. (Genesis is impressed by Zack’s vast knowledge and Zack is honored to have to finally have the respect of one his heroes <3)
• Zack, slowly getting tutored by Genesis about the wonderful world of pomology so he can finally understand Angeal’s stories. Genesis tells him all about the history of the Dumbapple—soon followed by Zack developing a newfound appreciation and fancy for Banora White juice. Angeal’s heart does a flip every time Zack asks for a glass <3
BONUS!~
• Zack, getting through to Sephiroth in the Nibelheim library because, instead of simply grasping Sephiroth’s hand as he turns to leave, Zack does a little something else: he squeezes it. One two three. It’s something they’ve been doing for over a year now, a sign of unconditional friendship and trust. A sign that breaks the fog of Jenova’s control as the three cryptic squeezes ring their true meaning in his mind.
I love you…
(Fic coming soon! :3c)

Hello!!
Your comics are just incredible!
Don't you ever think about print them and create a book? Maybe sell it?
Everytime I'm seeing the pages I'm wondering how they would look like as sheets of paper into a comic book !
Also, the way you draw is amazing!
I like your style! I love the mixes of colors and the movement you can pass with the drawings!
I've already seen some comic books like this and I love them
Thank you for your time :D
Thank you! And yes! After I complete the story, I'm planning to create a printable pdf and put it out there for everyone to download. But I won't be printing it, because it would generate costs (time+shipping) and I really want this to be free for all.

Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love by @isthisselfcare
This was my gateway to fanfiction back in 2022 (after seeing it recommended countless times on the romance books subreddit). I read it again just prior to typesetting it last month, and man—what a fic. It's a charming showcase of the merits of transformative works. No other depiction of Draco can top this one for me, and it ticks all the fluffy, slow burn milestones it promises in the tags. Not to mention, it's hilarious. A perfect romance read, like the redditors promised.
Anyway, after reading all 200K words on my phone—for a second time—I wanted a physical copy for the next reread. Although there's a few existing typesets available, I decided to make my own. My goal was a reminiscent rom-com vibe that spoke for itself.

There's no illustrations, only some recurring visual motifs: the heart shaped glasses; the rings; moon phase dividers, which are a nod to Hermione's research trips around the country. The significance of flowers and geodesic wards in the story influenced the title design and back cover.
Tumblr media
My favourite part is the spine; there aren't many fanfictions I'd recognise by acronym, but this is one.
Likely my one and only bind for HP, and it makes me smile whenever I pass the bookshelf. Thank you isthisselfcare for sharing your work, as well as your policy on personal fanbinds. Let's keep fandom free everyone 🩷
Technical details and bookbinding ramblings under the cut:
A5 casebinding with an attempt at trimming the edges. This bad boy has 528 pages, printed in seven signatures. A breeze to stitch together, sure, but trimming didn't go so well.
Bookcloth is homemade from pink cotton and a flax-like fabric... I couldn't quite iron out the creases in either case, but I was too impatient to be done with the bind to retry washing and ironing again. I figure it makes it rustic 🤷‍♀️
Tumblr media
Pre-printed cardstock endpapers, a gold bookmark ribbon, and handsewn double core headbands. I love how these look, although I succumbed to my usual habit of having too many wraps 🥲 They're squashy but not the worst for a first attempt.
The cover features layers of printable vinyl stickers, clear protective bookwrap and an overlay of rose gold metallic HTV. It was near impossible to ratio the HTV to the print-and-cut vinyl accurately. The back summary graphic ended up waaaay too big, but after three misprints and using up nearly all my HTV, I wasn't in the mood to fix it.
Sabon is the body text font, one I wasn't familiar with. It works really well for romance fiction. I used Beautiful Dream as a feature font, using a mix of the two for the title design and back cover summary.

I don't think the American Library Association is on Tumblr, so I'm sharing this. If you've had your work censored, you know the toll it takes.
Are you going to see names you really don't like on the list of banned authors? Yes. But you're also going to see Dr. Ibram X. Kendi and Judy Blume. And that should upset you more.
Be an adult about it.
